Independence Day!

20th July: Colombian Independence Day!

Colombian Independence Day is celebrated annually on the 20th July.  The event marks the day that, in 1810, the residents of Bogotá were stirred into protesting on the streets against Spanish rule. A limited independence, later made permanent, was decreed in the country, freeing Colombia from the Spanish.
The riot was sparked under unusual circumstances, although the plan is said to have been designed in advance. The plan was for a selection of Bogota citizens to ask the Spanish merchant Joaquín González Llorente for a vase. It was assumed - correctly - that Llorente, an uncharitable man, would refuse. This refusal would give an excuse to start the riot. Accounts differ on whether Llorente rudely denied the request or not, but the end result was the same: Patriots took to the streets claiming that Llorente had been rude and an already bubbling population eventually overflowed.

  1. The independence of Colombia was a process that consisted of several rebellions, confrontations and crises, since it was until the year 1819 when, thanks to the victory in the Battle of Boyacá, the Congress of Angostura and the official birth of the Republic of Colombia. However, July 20, 1810 was the date decreed by the United States Congress of Colombia as the anniversary of the proclamation of national independence.
